Beginning a fitness journey is a transformative experience that can change your life in countless ways. However, the traditional path to a healthier and happier YOU is often riddled with self-doubt, unrealistic expectations, and fear. This is the advice that I wish someone told me when I first started my fitness journey. When I started my fitness journey many years ago I told myself it was because I wanted to get stronger and run farther, but in my heart I knew it was because I wanted to “be skinny.” I didn’t love myself or my body and I thought if I exercised more then I would eventually “earn my love.”

It was so hard to stay consistent, because when I “failed” to meet a physical goal I would beat myself up. I then would unconsciously tell myself, “see I knew I wasn’t good enough.” I was so focused on looking a certain way, and I believed that once my body looked that way, THEN I will be worthy of love, from myself and others. But no matter how hard I trained I never felt like it was “good enough.” I would get to a certain weight, but was never truly satisfied. I would find something else “wrong” with my body and then hyper-focus on “fixing” that aspect of my body.

In reality, my body was never the problem. My body was always beautiful and worthy of my own love. I simply didn’t feel like I was ever enough. I didn’t know what self-love looked or felt like and my actions, mindset, negative self-talk, behaviors, etc all demonstrated my lack of love for myself. 

Now, I feel deep compassion for my past self, especially after learning to love who I am. At that time, I didn’t acknowledge the incredible strength and worthiness that I possessed. I spent many years despising myself without even realizing it. But now, since I have truly embraced self-love, my actions, behaviors, and mindset all reflect this love. Learning to love myself using the methods explained in this article has been a truly beautiful journey. I’m grateful that I made the decision to embark on this journey!
